Letter to the Editor - Bibles Confiscated
Last Tuesday at City Hall twenty officers, police
and
bi-law, stormed a peaceful vigil, held by a group of Christians, at the
steps
of City Hall. Officers confiscated Bibles, Christian books, and
pictures of Calgary's
homeless. What’s ironic about the raid is that
the people,
who were demonstrating, were trying to draw attention to the fact that
our
rights are slowly being stripped from us. In this display of excessive
force,
the officers gave us a clear example of how our rights are under fire.

The freedom
to peacefully protest, the freedom of religion, the freedom of
assembly, and
the freedom of expression were all maliciously attacked and undermined
by the
raid. Bibles and Christian materials were taken, one citizen was jabbed
in the
face by an angry officer's elbow, and citizens were pushed around. Wake up people, Bibles were confiscated from a
peaceful demonstration. Many atrocities under
tyrannical regimes, in history, stripped citizens of rights to freedom
of
religion and confiscated Bibles, and now Calgary
officers are doing it. I for one am
shocked and outraged. I somehow feel the
public outcry would be enormous had this event involved Muslims and
Korans. Why not now?
